Eastern Illinois University

Testimony:

Ever since I can remember, my identity has been wrapped up in how well I perform in athletics, my relationships with friends and family, and how people view my life. Fall 2017, I arrived at Winthrop University in South Carolina to play college basketball thinking that my identity was set. That fall I met a guy named Asa Watson, (on staff for a campus ministry) who was very intentional to hangout with me. He began inviting me over for dinner with him, his wife, and 2 little girls. He began asking me questions that no one had ever asked me before and I couldn’t stay away from him! I began to consistently read my Bible and I realized that I had been proclaiming Jesus as savior, but not Lord over my life. I saw how Asa and others were unwavering in their identity and it began to click. The gospel not only made sense, but it was objectively true which changed everything. For the past 6 years God has graciously shown me through His Word, Christian community, and healthy local churches that the true source of joy and contentment is found in the life, death, resurrection, and sure second coming of Christ. I no longer have to perform for my identity, but rest in what Christ has already accomplished. I desire to go on staff because I’ll be able to invest my time into 18-22 year-olds in the way that Asa and many others did mine.
